This month, we will talking about Migration! Many users have experience migrating from one on-prem version to another and also from on-prem to SharePoint online! This meeting will be a guided discussion. Bring your questions and experiences. We welcome a lively discussion!
Here are some items we would like to discuss:

- Migration tools we’ve used – Fusion, ShareGate, Metalogix – pros and cons of each.
- Differences in versions and especially on-prem versus O365 with all the restrictions, like List View Threshold – and creative ways to get around them or plan/change architecture as needed.
- Workflows and Forms – Nintex, SharePoint Designer, InfoPath (dropping off in 2026) to Power Platform
- Custom code
- What do you have and create a plan for what to move, archive, delete, etc.
- Will you do a lift and shift or restructure completely?
- Will you do cleanup before you move things?
- Remove ROT
- Archive old data
- Only move current/active data
- Plan to work with individual teams to provide guidance and timelines for cleaning up their data
- Change management and communication.
- Pilot your plan, choose 1-5 groups to work with and work out the kinks before going full scale.
- Track your progress with a burn-down, make sure you’re staying within time-frames or adjusting as needed.
- May want to partner with a vendor to assist.
- Detail architecture of your new environment:
- Site Collections
- Hub sites/associated sites
- Will subsites be allowed and if so, what are the parameters of when to use?
- Intranet
- When will Teams be used versus SharePoint versus OneDrives?
- Term Store, Content Type Hub, Metadata
- Branding
- Retention Policies
- Security Policies
- Users and Groups
- Executive support and budget.
- Classic features/sites versus Modern (ex. Events vs. Calendars)
